An old growth forest adventure on Mauna Loa
Our Puʻu ʻŌʻō Trail private experience apart is the depth of interpretation and the wildness of the place. This is not a paved crater-rim stroll — it is a historic cattle-driving route across Mauna Loa’s 1855 and 1881 lava flows, weaving through kīpuka: older forest islands spared by fire, filled with ancient koa and ʻōhiʻa, and alive with native honeycreepers.
Your eco guide brings wilderness leadership, birding skill, and Hawaiian cultural context so the day is educational, safe, and unhurried. We handle logistics, gear, and the special-use permit for a pristine lava-tube visit when conditions and regulations allow. Private groups mean more birdsong, more questions answered, and more time in the kīpuka.
Rain, fog, and cool temperatures are common above 5,000 feet. We plan for Saddle weather, carry proper layers, and teach Leave No Trace on fragile lava and forest soils.

Meet & gear-up — Saddle Road Puʻu ʻŌʻō Trailhead (or Powerline access by arrangement). Safety brief, weather check, cultural orientation.

Lava mosaics — Follow well-marked ahu across pioneer ʻōhiʻa, brush, and open ʻaʻā / pāhoehoe. Learn flow ages (1855 & 1881) and how life recolonizes rock.

Kīpuka immersion — Step into older forest pockets spared by lava. Quiet birding for ʻiʻiwi, ʻapapane, ʻamakihi, ʻelepaio, ʻōmaʻo; chance encounters with ʻakiapōlāʻau, ʻio, and nēnē.

Look into a Lava tube- Explore geology, roots, moss gardens, and cultural stories

Optional Powerline connector — Strong groups may use the Powerline Road junction (~3.7–4 mi) for a customized loop; road-walk segments only if conditions and safety allow.
