A route toward Halemaʻumaʻu may be considered for guests who want a more demanding option. Compared with the usual crater-rim experience, it involves substantially more climbing, with approximately 500 feet of descent followed by about 500 feet of ascent.
Discuss this option before the hike so the guide can consider everyone’s fitness and walking ability. It is available only when the trail is open and the weather, volcanic gases and current park conditions make the route appropriate. Halemaʻumaʻu is therefore a possible alternative, not a guaranteed part of the private tour.

The usual crater-rim experience covers approximately 3–4 miles across paved sections and maintained trails, with some minor uneven ground. Stops are included, but guests should be able to remain on their feet, maintain their balance and continue walking after each break.
