Arrive 15 minutes early and follow the final map pin and written directions provided for your reservation. If you cannot find the meeting point or parking is full, call the guide or contact number included in your pre-hike message.

Transportation
Guests must arrange their own reliable round-trip transportation. Uber and other rideshare availability can be limited in and around the park, and public bus travel can take a long time. Do not rely on rideshare or the bus unless both arrival and return transportation have been confirmed in advance.

Nāhuku formed approximately 500 years ago when the surface of a lava flow hardened while molten lava continued moving beneath it. The surrounding rainforest offers a striking contrast to the park’s exposed lava fields.

Jennifer founded Volcanoes Hiking Guides to help visitors experience volcanic landscapes through hiking, education and personal connection with the natural world.
She holds a BA degree in Recreation Management from the University of Montana and has worked in outdoor education, forest management and professional guiding. Her experience includes guiding in Yellowstone National Park and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
Jennifer is known for explaining geology, ecology and eruption history in a way that is easy to understand. She also plans each hike carefully around the group, weather and trail conditions.

Yvonne combines interpretive guiding with active study of volcanic features. She is a professional lava photographer, published researcher and volcanology student who has spent years observing and documenting Kīlauea.
Her photography and field knowledge help guests recognize details in lava fountains, craters, tephra, native plants and changing volcanic terrain. Her landscape photography has also been featured in magazines, bringing a strong visual perspective to the volcanic landscapes she helps guests understand.
Yvonne brings 3.5 years of park ranger experience at Zion National Park, summer ranger experience at Yellowstone National Park, and ranger experience at Mount St. Helens. She also guided for Epic Lava until the lava flow stopped in 2018, giving her firsthand experience guiding around active lava environments.

Cameron is a part-time guide with Volcanoes Hiking Guides and joins the team during school breaks while pursuing his PhD at the University of Georgia. He brings a strong background in hiking, mountaineering and endurance sports to the trail.
One thing Cameron especially enjoys helping guests understand is the immense scale of Mauna Loa. Although it can appear deceptively broad from many viewpoints, measured from the ocean floor to the summit it rises approximately 30,000 feet.
Cameron’s outdoor experience includes hiking and mountaineering, climbing 14,000-foot peaks and participating in Ironman events. That background gives him a firsthand appreciation for endurance, mountain terrain and the scale of the volcanic landscapes guests experience in Hawaiʻi.
