Most people wait for Kīlauea’s towering lava fountains. I love those too, but some of the volcano’s most revealing moments happen before the main fountaining begins.
I arrived at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park early, before meeting my clients that afternoon. From roughly six miles away, I watched a small dome fountain rise, roll and collapse above the vent. It was vigorous, but its movement was surprisingly graceful.
The mist eventually moved across the caldera and obscured the view. Before it did, I captured this original video.

This is not a close-range recording. The active vent is inside a hazardous closed area, and the footage was captured from an open viewing area along Kīlauea’s caldera rim.
What Is a Dome Fountain?
A dome fountain is a low, rounded upwelling of fluid lava.
It can form when lava rapidly emerges through a constricted vent or fissure, or when lava rises beneath the surface of a lava lake.
Instead of shooting upward as a narrow jet, the lava swells, rolls and folds over itself like water bubbling from a fountain.
The USGS has documented dome fountains at Kīlauea, Mauna Ulu and Puʻu ʻŌʻō. One previously observed Halemaʻumaʻu dome fountain was approximately 16 feet high and 33 feet wide.
Despite the similar name, a dome fountain is not a lava dome. A lava dome is a relatively solid mound created when thick, viscous lava slowly piles up over a vent.
A dome fountain is a moving feature made from actively circulating molten lava.
What Happened Before Kīlauea Episode 51?
On the morning of July 15, 2026, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported a sustained overflow from Kīlauea’s north vent. The overflow was being fed by dome fountains approximately 10 to 30 feet high.
That activity began at about 4:47 a.m. HST.
Several hours later, at approximately 8:30 a.m., episode 51 of Kīlauea’s ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption began. The difference was dramatic.
The small dome fountains developed into sustained lava fountaining that eventually reached approximately 950 feet above the ground. Episode 51 continued until 4:46 p.m. that afternoon.
That transition is one reason I enjoy watching the precursor stage. The smaller activity allows you to see the vent filling, overflowing and changing before the larger fountain dominates the view.

A dome fountain can appear during the build-up to a larger episode, but it should not be treated as a precise countdown.
Scientists also use ground deformation, seismic tremor, gas emissions, vent glow and overflow behaviour when evaluating what the volcano may do next.
Dome Fountain vs. Tall Lava Fountain
Here is the simplest comparison.
Dome fountain:
Shape: Low, broad and rounded
Movement: Rolling, pulsing and folding
Typical height in this event: About 10 to 30 feet
Common effect: Can feed an overflow or lava pond
What it shows: Lava is actively rising and circulating near the vent
Tall lava fountain:
Shape: Narrower and strongly vertical
Movement: Fast jets of molten lava and fragments
Maximum height during episode 51: Approximately 950 feet
Common effect: Feeds larger lava flows and produces tephra
What it shows: More vigorous gas-driven fountaining is underway
The dome fountain may appear smaller, but it offers a clearer view of how molten lava moves immediately above the vent.
What to Watch for in the Video?
Watch the lava’s edges rather than only the brightest centre.
You can see the glowing material rise, spread and fold back over itself. Darker areas form where the lava surface begins cooling, while fresh orange lava continues pushing upward from below.
Also notice that the fountain does not maintain one fixed shape. It expands, collapses and rebuilds as the rate of lava entering the vent changes.
That constant movement is what made it look as though the lava was dancing.
The video also demonstrates how distance and weather affect eruption viewing. Even a vigorous feature can look small from several miles away, and fog or rain can hide the vent within minutes.
Can Visitors See Kīlauea’s Dome Fountains?
Visitors may be able to see dome fountains, overflows, lava fountains or nighttime glow from designated overlooks when Kīlauea is active and visibility is clear.
There is never a guarantee. Kīlauea’s current summit activity is episodic, with short eruptions separated by pauses that can last days or weeks.
Fog, rain, volcanic gas and the location of the active vent can also affect visibility.
The eruption area inside Halemaʻumaʻu is closed because of hazards including volcanic gases, unstable crater walls, ground cracks and falling tephra.
Visitors should remain at open overlooks and check current USGS and National Park Service updates before travelling to the park.
